Meet superhero drag performer Rock M. Sakura! You may know her from “RuPaul’s Drag Race”(RPDR) Season 12 last year. She is only the second RPDR cast member from San Francisco, after Honey Mahogany in Season 5.
Known for her campy performances and anime-inspired outfits and makeup, Sakura has her own YouTube channel with more than 55,000 subscribers and over one million views.
She recently launched her own series, “Rock M. Sakura’s Sexy Superhero Sickening Spectacular,” on the streaming service World of Wonder Plus. It’s a mockumentary that follows Sakura around San Francisco as she searches for her superpowers.
On this week’s Out in the Bay, Sakura talks about her time on RPDR, her new show and other digital content, the trials of showbiz during COVID, and anti-Asian and anti-sex-worker violence. She came out as a former sex worker in a lengthy Tweet following the March 17 spa shootings in Georgia that killed eight people, including six Asian-American women.
See Rock’s fabulous outfits! The outfit featured here on Out in the Bay (above) was made by Rock herself, inspired by ChibiMoon from Sailor Moon, in one night! It was designed and constructed to be Rock’s entrance outfit for RPDR to garner attention from her anime fan base. Photo by Cash Monet.
In our talk, Sakura describes her general aesthetic and in particular, details her RPDR “Spring Look” costume that she designed and did the artwork for. See it here on Fandom. See more of her fab outfits on Sakura’s Instagram page.
Know more about Rock! She answers a buttload of Google questions about herself in this video on her YouTube channel.
